Random Thoughts about "中庸"--The Doctrine of Mean

"喜怒哀乐之未发,谓之中;
发而皆中节,谓之和;
中也者,天下之大本也;
和也者,天下之达道也。
致中和,天地位焉,万物育焉。"

When joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure have not yet arisen, it is called zhong (equilibrium, centrality, mean).
When they arise to their appropriate levels, it is called "harmony."
Zhong is the great root of all-under-heaven.
"Harmony" is the penetration of the Dao through all-under-heaven.
When the mean and harmony are actualized, Heaven and Earth are in their proper positions, and the myriad things are nourished.

I was reading my text book last night. Man needs self-efficacy. and at the same time, he can't leave social network and social supports. 中庸"The Doctrine of Mean" jamped into my mind.

Human can only comprehend certain frequents of waves, which are in the middle of all frequents of waves.
Human likes certain weather, not too hot, nor too cold; not too dry, nor too wet.
Human likes certain body shapes, not too fat, nor too thin.
......

It seems like "the Doctrine of Mean" holds certain levels of truth.

Maya Lin

I watched a documentary of Maya Lin couple years ago. Her art works are showing at the Henry Art Gallery. I also went to her lecture last Thursday. It was a pity I couldn't see her in person, as the tickets were sold out. I had to watch live video.

I felt like I was like a person who had a very tasty egg, wanted to see the hen who laid the egg.

Doing interview is hard!!!!

I have to do an interview for my homework this week. It was very hard. I felt like an idiot to ask people on campus for interview.

Lucky, I did find two people to interview, however, I couldn't keep them talking for 40 minutes as it was required for my assignment.......

Now I know I can't be a reporter.

Ski

As I told many of you that I started to like ski, this winter season I invested on downhill ski gear. I have used it for three times already. One of my most exciting progress is that I got to the blue runs.

Last Sunday, Amenda and I went to Stevens Pass for downhill ski again. Even it was snowing and rainning. we had fun. Until 3pm in the afternoon, I came to the lower section of a blue route. It was quite a flat area, yet my speed was pretty fast. When I tended to slow down by making a turn, I created a "2-point yard sale". I fell on the snow, with my left ski at least two yards away from me. Amenda who was just in front of me saw me fall. She immediant asked me if I was all right. For a second, I couldn't move. I said to her: "No." I kept laying on the snow. Then I saw two ski patrols come to me. They first checked if I was conscious, then asked me how I fell. They also requested first aid staff. When we were waiting for the first aid staff, Amenda and the two ski patrols kept making sure other parts of my body were all right.

I didn't exactly know how I was taken down the hill. When the first aid staff came, they first put me into some flat equitment used deliverying injuried persons on the snow. I guess it was some sort of slide. They said I was wrapped like a taco. My ski and poles were also wrapped with the flat equitment. The first aid staff then quickly took me down to the first aid room.

I was all right, except that my left ankle was twisted a little bit. I have to rest for one or two weeks before I can do any sports again. Ski season will end within a week. It meant to be my last ski of this season.
